Bringing a newborn home is one of the most exciting and overwhelming moments in a parent’s life. As tiny as they are, these little bundles of joy have big needs and even bigger ways of turning your world upside down—in the best way possible. If you're a new parent wondering what life with a newborn will look like, we’ve got you covered. Here's a guide to what you can expect during those precious (and sometimes challenging) first few weeks.

1. Endless Feeding Sessions

Your newborn's stomach is tiny—about the size of a cherry at birth—so they'll need to eat frequently to stay full and grow. Whether you're breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, expect to feed your baby every 2-3 hours, around the clock.

  • What to expect: Newborns can nurse or take a bottle for 20-40 minutes per feeding. Cluster feeding (when babies feed more frequently for a few hours) is also common in the early weeks.
  • Tip: Keep snacks, water, and entertainment nearby for yourself during feedings, especially in the middle of the night.

2. Lots of Sleeping… but Not for You

Newborns sleep about 16-18 hours a day, but it doesn’t always feel like it because their sleep is broken up into short stretches of 2-4 hours at a time.

  • What to expect: Sleep patterns are irregular at first, and your baby will need help learning the difference between day and night.
  • Tip: Sleep when the baby sleeps! It’s cliché, but even short naps can help you feel more rested. Create a calming bedtime routine early to set the stage for good sleep habits later.

3. Diapers, Diapers, and More Diapers

Prepare yourself for non-stop diaper changes—newborns can go through 8-12 diapers a day in the early weeks!

  • What to expect: Expect both wet and dirty diapers, especially after feedings. The first few days will include meconium, a sticky, tar-like substance, but it will transition to more typical bowel movements soon.
  • Tip: Keep a diaper changing station stocked and accessible, and use a diaper cream to prevent rashes.

4. Crying (and Figuring Out What It Means)

Crying is your baby’s main form of communication, so it’s no surprise that newborns cry—a lot. Hunger, discomfort, overstimulation, or needing comfort are common reasons.

  • What to expect: On average, newborns cry for 2-3 hours a day. It might take some trial and error to figure out what your baby needs and that's okay.
  • Tip: Learn your baby’s cues (rooting for hunger, fussing when tired) and try calming techniques like swaddling, rocking, or white noise.

5. Umbilical Cord and Other Newborn Care

Your baby’s umbilical cord stump will need special care as it heals and falls off, usually within 1-2 weeks. Newborns also have delicate skin, so baths and grooming should be gentle.

  • What to expect: Sponge baths are recommended until the cord stump falls off. Keep the area clean and dry, and dress your baby in loose clothing to avoid irritation.
  • Tip: Use fragrance-free products for your baby’s sensitive skin and don’t forget those tiny nails—they grow fast!

6. Bonding and Development

One of the most rewarding parts of having a newborn is bonding with them. Even though they seem tiny and fragile, they’re taking in the world and learning more than you realize.

  • What to expect: Newborns love skin-to-skin contact, familiar voices, and faces. In the early weeks, your baby will start focusing on objects, recognizing your voice, and even giving their first sleepy smiles.
  • Tip: Spend time cuddling, singing, and talking to your baby to help foster their emotional and cognitive development.

7. Your Recovery

While much of the focus will be on your newborn, it’s important to remember that you’re recovering too—physically, emotionally, and mentally.

  • What to expect: Fatigue, hormonal changes, and adjusting to a new routine can be overwhelming at times. Postpartum recovery looks different for everyone, so give yourself grace.
  • Tip: Don’t hesitate to ask for help, whether it’s from a partner, family, or friends. If you’re feeling down or struggling with postpartum depression, reach out to your healthcare provider.

8. Celebrate the Little Moments

The newborn stage is fleeting, and while it may feel exhausting at times, it’s also filled with some of the most magical moments you’ll ever experience.

  • What to expect: From the first time they grasp your finger to their first coo, these little milestones will make the sleepless nights worth it.
  • Tip: Capture these memories with photos and videos, but also make time to be fully present in the moment.
