Family Photos: The Outfit Guide
Gone are the days of monochromatic color schemes! Who here remembers family photos with your mom yelling up the stairs that everyone has to wear something blue. Or even better, khaki pants with white shirts! Business casual must have been the thing to do in the 90’s, thankfully we know better now!
Starting with mom’s outfit is actually so important! You should be comfortable and feel beautiful. Whether you prefer a dress with a cinched waist and hoop earrings, your fave pair of high-waisted jeans with a cardigan tucked in, or a cute matching set, make sure you love what you have on first. This absolutely is a situation that calls for a new outfit!
Coordinating Colors:
Stay within the same color family- think warm tones with warm tones, cool tones with cool. This way you can mix solids and patterns, but I would suggest staying away from tiny prints and patterns/plaids since some cameras will distort these!
Muted and Neutral Colors:
This works great for minimalists! It will help keep the spotlight on your gorgeous family and not on what you’re wearing. Mix whites with creams, peaches with tan, or camel with light grey and black. This is a great way to ensure your photos are less trendy and more classic.
Matching Dresses:
If you and your little girl love to match, this is your time to shine! And I’m sure some dads would be stoked to match as well!
Let the Kids Have Input:
If your kids are old enough to have opinions about what they wear, make sure to get an approved outfit beforehand! Fingers crossed for no meltdowns before you end up leaving for the shoot in a Spiderman or Princess costume!
Baby Clothing:
I'm currently obsessed with bubble rompers, they are perfect to cover up your babe's diaper! Another trend I'm loving are clogs with socks, nothing is better than chunky baby legs overflowing out of tall socks! A popular trend right now are knitted and linen pieces, very European inspired.
Remember: You may feel your imperfect family photos aren't going to be worth the wrestle, but future you will regard these as family heirlooms! Have fun with it and best of luck!
