The Freshly Picked Milano Collection
DEEP DIVE INTO THE DIAPER BAG DESIGN PROCESS
Introducing the Milano Collection, an elevated and luxurious collection for moms. This lineup of bags are designed with a Saffiano texture to sophisticate your diaper bags while functioning as a personal purse for mom. We are diving deep into our process of creating this special collection that was designed for moms, by moms.
Initial Steps:
Planning for the new bags started late 2019 and the beginning of 2020 with a survey asking customers what they loved and what could be improved. After gathering data, we learned that moms wanted a diaper bag that was luxurious, while being functional as a diaper bag. Many loved the look of a designer tote, but wished it had pockets for organization, zips to secure their items, an insulated pocket for a bottle, and so much more. With that information, we were set to design a new diaper bag that would elevate motherhood.
Once we had an idea of what was needed in the market, we began researching what was already out there. The Product Team turned to Pinterest for inspiration and our Product Designer started sketching out ideas and developing concepts for a new diaper bag. After different rounds of sketches, the design team began to approve sketches and create more detailed and planned out ideas. Once the sketches and market research are complete, the team presents to Susan and other leaders in the company. The final decision is based on preferences and what style fits the brand of Freshly Picked. Then the interior of the bag is developed.
Samples:
For this collection, we wanted to have an interior that would keep mom organized with a big compartment. All the bags have a water-resistant lining with a latte tone to make finding items easier. When designing the Milano Collection, every detail was implemented to make the bags practical for mom. After sketches, samples are created to have moms wear-test. Wear testing allows us to learn more about how the bag functions for a mom and what is missing or what needs to be altered. In our initial sample of the Milano tote, we discovered that moms hated it! It was difficult to fit bottles and diapers, so we fixed it. Wear testing is important to know what has to be altered to create a product customers will love. Our second round of wear testing typically lasts about 6-8 weeks, we encourage moms to be really intense with the bag!
After wear testing, we send off all the alterations and our final sample is created. In order to get the final product, our Product Designer sends off an instructions manual with ALL the details of the product. Everything from the dimensions, material, exterior, and interior has to be approved by our Designer before the final product is created. If a product doesn’t meet our standard by the third sample, we drop it and move onto a new project.
What’s special about the collection? The bags are made out of Saffiano vegan leather. Saffiano refers to the crosshatch texture in leather, found in many designer and high-end brands. With a special coating, our bags are durable and easy to clean. We even took steel wool to scratch the bag and test its durability (nothing happened) the bag is very durable! The collection features a tote, wristlet, satchel, and crossbody. The crossbody was a specific request from Susan, it’s sophisticated and a reasonable size for a mom with older kiddos! We are excited about the collection and can’t wait for our customers to love it!
