The air is filled with the scent of pine, and the streets are adorned with twinkling lights - the holiday season is upon us. As we gather around the fireplace and cozy up, there's nothing quite like the joy and nostalgia that Christmas movies bring. I have a list of my own personal favorites and “classics” I like to run through each year.

The Classics:

Nestled snugly at the heart of every Christmas movie marathon are the classics that have stood the test of time. From the mischievous charm of "Home Alone” and “Christmas Vacation”, to the old school heartwarming classic “White Christmas” these films are like old friends, ready to welcome us home each holiday season. I will admit, Home Alone is an easy watch, where White Christmas is not for everyone - you had to grow up on it, but they are both classics none-the-less.

Animated Delights:

For the young and young at heart (like me), animated Christmas movies add a sprinkle of magic to the festive season. Whether it's the whimsical adventures of "The Polar Express" or the endearing tale of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," these films capture the imagination and bring joy to audiences of all ages. Don’t forget to add both “Grinch” movies to this category (1966 and 2018).

Modern Marvels:

As the years roll by, a new generation of Christmas movies emerges, films like "Elf" and "Four Christmases" bring fresh perspectives and tons of laughter. These movies are very different on the movie rating scale, so make sure you check what audience you have before viewing! Explore how these movies blend humor, romance, and the magic of the season to create a festive atmosphere that resonates with today's audiences.

Family Favorites:

Christmas movies have a unique way of bringing families together. A couple on my list are the “Santa Claus” movies, 1, 2 and 3. Other options include “Christmas with the Kranks” and “Miracle on 34th street”. These are perfect for the whole family gathered together with a treat at the end of a long day filled with holiday activities!

Hidden Gems:

Beyond the blockbusters and household names, there exists a treasure trove of lesser-known Christmas gems waiting to be discovered. For me, these consist of “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” - trust me, it’s funny! Another one is the “Princess Switch” movies from Netflix and “Let it Snow” From Hallmark. Yes I said it, but let’s be honest, Christmas time is ok to watch cheesy chicflicks.

Christmas movies have the power to transport us to magical worlds, evoke cherished memories, and remind us of the values that make this season so special. Whether you find comfort in the classics or delight in the newer additions to the genre, these films have a way of bringing joy and togetherness to our holiday celebrations. So, grab some popcorn or hot chocolate, snuggle up with loved ones, and let the magic of Christmas movies fill your heart with warmth and wonder. After all, 'tis the season for love, laughter, and the joy of good storytelling.
